What is it about getting older that activates our downsizing button? The goal to reduce “stuff” is shared by many Boomers beginning their journey toward retirement. Years of clutter from multiple moves, multiple kids, and sometimes even multiple marriages can result in basements, attics and garages overflowing with orphaned belongings no longer needed or wanted.
Our grown children plan trips to see us with the full realization that we’ll resort to BEGGING to ensure their cars have at least some of our “treasures” in their trunks before they leave from a weekend visit. The other issue during Boomer years is that we’ve been the recipients of our parents downsizing endeavors and the result is simply too much stuff and not enough room for it.
Luckily there are many options available and numerous sources of assistance for Boomers and Seniors in regard to “stuff” reduction.
Rummage or Garage Sales involve alot of work but the financial reward and feeling of satisfaction knowing items are being recycled instead of filling landfills can be satisgying. Check out Best Garage Sale Tips for some innovative suggestions.
Disposal Services (click the 1-800 Got Junk picture above) are extremely useful and I’m personally a great fan.
Senior Move Managers (National Association of Senior Move Management (NASSM) or a professionally trained organizer the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) are additional options to consider.
