Next Avenue

Next Avenue, PBS’s new website for Baby Boomers, is touted as a destination  ”where grown-ups keep growing,” PBS’ first venture to begin on the Internet rather than broadcast TV, was conceived and developed at Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) in St. Paul, Minnesota. Referred to as  ”Sesame Street” for Baby Boomers, the site is geared to help teach the “over 50 yr. olds”  how to handle their lives now that they have reached middle age, just as the pre-school TV show

Vegetarian Child In a Family of Meat Eaters

Adopting a vegetarian lifestyle approximately 15 years ago, my oldest daughter continues to hear this comment from her 90 yr. old grandmother, (my mom)…“Oh honey, just a little bit of chicken won’t hurt!!”  She was in her early 20′s when she made the decision to embrace vegetarianism, and was no longer living at home.  At times during her childhood (as my picky eater) if she had the option of choosing her own meals, spaghetti, pizza and mac and cheese would

“Ping” For Dummies?

PING?

I keep hearing this term and even as a BLOGGING Boomer, (I guess that equates to one step above novice computer user) I have no idea what it means.  I’ve nosed around the internet reading different explanations and to be honest, I still have no idea what it is.  The only time I’ve heard of “ping” was when “pong” was the next word in the sentence. I did find the website: http://www.whatisping.net/, which offered this explanation… The best analogy that I

Gender Stereotypes: Forget the Pink is for Girls and Blue is for Boys

As babies and toddlers my daughters had trains, trucks  Legos and blocks as well as dolls and mini-kitchenettes to play with.  My elderly in-laws found it somewhat unusual but joined the girls on the floor, happily creating Lego structures.    I can’t remember why I felt so strongly that they be exposed to playthings long considered “boy” toys. My focus always seemed to be providing pathways for them to explore that would provide an opportunity for them to reach their

Financial Birth Defect, Children’s Identity Theft…Who’s Watching?

child identity theft

“More than 140,000 children are the victims of identity theft annually in the United States,”  according to a study conducted by I.D. Analytics. Could a bankruptcy be tarnishing your grandchild’s credit record?  Why wait until they reach adulthood to find out?  Chilren are targeted 51 times more than adults because a child’s Social Security number is unused, it’s easy to tie it to a different name and birth date. “Appalled” was my reaction, as I watched a recent news show

Are You Afraid of the “S” word?

Yoga

Are you shunning your AARP newsletters?  Do you wince at the term “Senior?”  I don’t think you’re alone. Have you thought about checking out what’s shaken at your local Senior Center or are you too cool for that nonsense?  I just read a delightful article titled “Senior centers seek to draw reluctant baby boomers.”  that started me thinking about how Baby Boomers are (or are not) embracing the “S” word. For some reason I haven’t succumbed to age mortification, even though

Teens Encouraged to Get Their Grandparents Online and “Wired” Up!

Grandparents Gone Wired

Boomer Grandparents face an uphill climb in their quest to maintain a relationship with their tech crazed grandchildren.  Finally, someone’s going to help us keep up with all the new technology! If you’re not taking a class at your area senior center, or if you’re a Mac user taking the classes available to you at a local Apple store, there’s nothing available for seniors in regard to computer or social networking classes.  The desire is there, we just need the services!
